			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I love my food and love my wine. Most nights I have about two glasses of wine with my dinner. Sometimes more. Recently I decided to cut back and not drink any wine during the week while incorporating<a title="Dr. Al Sears, MD" href="http://www.alsearsmd.com/shop.php?Clk=4046604" target="_blank"> Dr. Al Sears P.A.C.E.</a> program of exercise 3 to 4 times per week. The results have been short of amazing.</p>
<p>The first week I began the P.A.C.E. program on a Sunday and had no wine until Friday. I exercised Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday that week. I also cut out carbohydrates with dinner eating only meat or fish and vegetables or salad. Remarkably I am sleeping much better and have found that many nights I actually am able to sleep through the night (still waking briefly once or twice) for up to 7 – 7 ½ hours. This is a breakthrough for me having suffered from insomnia for nearly a decade.</p>
<p>I will chronicle my success (or failure!) with this program on my blog <a href="http://www.menopauseweightloss.net/">Menopause Weight Loss</a> and assuming success with this very easy lifestyle program will broadcast my results here and everywhere!</p>

It has been known for sometime that there is a link between insufficient sleep and weight gain. Now this study confirms in more detail that you are likely to eat 6 percent less if you add an additional 60 minutes of sleep to your schedule! Whether it is assumed that if you stay up later you will snack during this time or is it the actual sleep that assists the metabolism? Not sure but I intend to look for some more information about this!</p>
<p>Another study has come to light on the issue as well, Harvard tracked 68,000 women and their sleep habits and found that those who slept only 5 or less hours per night had (are you ready for this?) in 16 years, a 32 percent chance of gaining MORE than 30 pounds than women who slept 7 or more hours per night. That is amazing, 30 pounds is a lot!</p>
<p>Once again we find a link between sleep, insomnia and weight gain. I am a dreadful sleeper and seem to be on a slow but steady weight gain track. It seems apparent that when trying to or planning to lose weight getting your sleep hygiene in order should be a first step.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I hit my mid 40’s I started to have insomnia and didn’t think about discussing it with the doctor. I would get up, work on the computer, read or watch TV.<br />
There was a lot of stress in my life at the time and I had a very young child and I just thought it was normal for stress to interfere with sleep. Then I started to have occasional migraines and again, didn’t really think about going to the doctor. When I did (we were living in Belgium at the time and the doctor was a young female, nowhere near menopause) she asked me if I also had trouble sleeping; I took the opportunity to discuss it with her, she explained that insomnia was common in premenopausal women and gave me the European equivalent of Ambien. I took it off and on for years with good results and between that and the migraine meds my quality of life improved. Later Ambien stopped working so well and started to make me feel a bit groggy during the day – the thing that I liked about it early on was that it did not do this. Anyway, after a few years I decided it wasn’t for me any longer but still kept a few for those dreadful nights.</p>

<p>I just read about a study done by<a href="http://www.redhotmamas.org/" target="_blank"> Red Hot Mamas</a> and Sonovian Pharma (unfortunately they are the manufacturers of Lunesta) that discusses the link with menopause and insomnia. It is a problem they say! Well most of us in the menopause years will agree with that without the study! But the interesting thing in the study was that most women don’t discuss it with their doctors. Why not? I didn’t either. In my case the doctor asked me and I said – yes, I had a problem. But this study says that not only are women not bringing up the insomnia issue with the docs but the docs aren’t asking about it either.
